WRI has provided forecasting and routing advice for commercial fleets worldwide since
1961. Our Professional Meteorologists are experienced in forecasting for all ocean basins, and
strive to provide vessels with the safest and most efficient routing possible. We forecast wind
and sea conditions for the period of the voyage, and convert the information into a track which
will provide the fastest, safest crossing possible, taking into consideration all weather, cargo and
special ship factors.
ACCURATE WEATHER INFORMATION PRESENTED IN A TIMELY FASHION IS VITAL TO ENSURING THAT THE VESSEL REACHES HER DESTINATION SAFELY AND ON TIME.
In fact, numerous vessels under WRI guidance have reached their destinations earlier than
expected because they followed WRI's recommended route. Of course, the Master is in charge
and always has the final word regarding which route to follow. However,
almost all Masters
receiving WRI guidance choose to follow the WRI-recommended route, because we have
earned their trust by providing quality routes time and time again.
Typically, our routing services begin with the receipt of an Estimated Time of Departure
(ETD) from the Master of the vessel 24 to 48 hours in advance of sailing time. Initial routing
is sent 6 to 8 hours in advance of departure,
so the Master can review our recommended route and make appropriate preparations prior to sailing.
While underway, the vessel is under constant review, and the Master is constantly informed
of all significant weather phenomena which will or may potentially affect the vessel. Should it be
found that an alternate route would be better, we immediately notify the Master of our revised
recommendation. Even if the vessel is already on the best possible route, we send updated
forecasts should new data suggest a change in the weather pattern. Also, should the Master
have any questions while underway, a forecaster can be reached immediately 24 hours a
day, 365 days a year.
“WRI
continues to do a very good job of routing the vessel.
Coupled with their weather updates and maps they provide a
very valuable service…I also feel that Weather Routing has also
done a very good job of balancing the various factors involved in
their routing decisions.
I have seldom had to deviate from their recommendations and
have found their routing essentially the best possible compromise
of speed, distance and handling characteristics of the ship.
This is a service I very much appreciate being provided.”
