Despite the active Atlantic Hurricane Season, WRI meteorologists attended three boat shows in the past 2 months. In September and in October, we had booths at the Newport International Boat Show and the U.S. Sailboat Show in Annapolis. Three of our representatives visited clients and partners at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show. For now, here are some highlights from Newport and Annapolis.
Operations Manager Jeremy Davis and Meteorologist Chris Iraggi handled the Newport International Boat Show booth. During the four show days, they met up with:
- Captain Dan Gulley and his wife, Jenny, from the M/Y Annastar. They stopped by the booth to discuss more about our services and their upcoming trips.
- Former captains and crew from previous vessels who used us. All were satisfied with our services and wanted to learn more about what we had to offer since they last used us. .
- Marnie Read gave us positive feedback on our services from the Camden Classics Cup this year.
Operations Manager Jeremy Davis and I managed the U.S. Sailboat Show in Annapolis. There we met up with some of our partners and clients such as:
- Captain Dennis Seymour and Captain Ed Maitz kindly provided testimonials on our service to visitors who stopped by the booth different days. We have also included recordings of these testimonials on our website. Please see the links below:
- John and Amanda Neal from Mahina Expeditions were holding sailing seminars. Jeremy attended one of their talks and gave a summary of our services. They stopped by our booth twice with interested seminar attendees who wanted to learn more about us.
- As sponsors of the 59 North booth, Andy Schell and Mia Karlsson invited us to their booth with other sponsors for a meet and greet. Andy has created podcasts on a variety sailing topics and discuss his expeditions on S/Y Isbjorn and he invited Jeremy to discuss weather on some of these reports.
As always, we met many potential clients to provide them with more information about our services. We look forward to hearing from them in the future and thanks to all who took the time to visit us at our booths. Here’s to the 2018 season!

Operations Manager Jeremy Davis, and Meteorologists Chris Iraggi and new attendee Alex Avalos were present at the Show on Nov 1st-2nd. While meeting potential and existing clients, near perfect weather was in place, with high temperatures in the lower 80's and plenty of sunshine.
Some of the highlights from this year's visit include:
- Stopping by the IGY Marinas booth and meeting with Bert Fowles. WRI provides forecasts for all of the IGY Marinas.
- Catching up with Captain Bill Zinser, one of our longest clients while walking the docks.
- Meeting Captain Troy on the M/Y Muchos Mas, where we learned more about how the vessel handles heavy weather conditions.
- An extensive tour of the M/Y Rock.iT and Suri where we met Captain Hendrik Jacobs and Juan Koegelenberg respectively, where we also discussed our forecasting services.
- Caught up with Captain Kelly Esser on the M/Y Cheers 46 and toured the vessel as well.
- Meeting Captain James Archer on the M/Y Te Manu for a tour, where we discussed our services and how currents effect the vessel.
- We also presented a 2017 WRI Appreciation Award to Captain Dan Gulley of the M/Y Annastar – learn more about this in Chris Iraggi's article.
In discussions with several captains, we learned that there is still quite a bit of uncertainty about what the effects of this year's rough hurricane season will be on the Northeast Caribbean. Some charters are in limbo, but others have just changed location to Antigua or the Windward Islands. There is some discussion that the islands directly hit will be in better shape within the next few months for charters to return. At WRI, our thoughts continue to go out to all those affected by this year's hurricane disasters.
We look forward to returning next year to the show!
The weather was perfect for the first few days of the Boat Show. Here is a view of some of the vessels from the top deck of the M/Y Suri.

WRI Gives Back to its Clients

This year, we have given our WRI Appreciation Award to not one, but three of our clients. The first recipient of the award was Captain Daniel Gulley onboard the Annastar.
Captain Daniel Gulley has been a client of ours for over 10 years and has been involved in the boating industry for over 25 years. He started as a Chief Engineer, but was promoted into the wheel house. He has been onboard many vessels throughout his career including M/Y Avanti and M/Y Victoria Del Mar. Gulley is currently serving as Captain of M/Y Annastar over the past year.
We discussed his opinion on where the yachting industry is headed, and he believes technology will increase its role in decision making while being Captain. However, he cautions the younger generations of Captains to not "take what the computer says and run away with it." Gulley believes it is imperative, in terms of weather forecasting, to have a professional look at the weather forecast to help interpret best departure times especially with charter guests.
He stated that WRI has assisted him countless times in this regard, especially within the Mediterranean, to avoid rough conditions during a charter. He feels that WRI forecasts, more specifically the hard copy forecasts, are invaluable to be shown to guests to help reschedule their desires for more pleasant charters
If a Captain were considering a weather service, Gulley would say it’s a "no brainer" to consider WRI. With constant monitoring, phone conversations, and prompt request replies; WRI has been a huge part of his success at sea and he couldn’t recommend it enough.
We look forward to next year’s Boat Show and our next recipients in 2018
From Left to Right: Jeremy Davis (Senior Meteorologist, Alex Avalos (Meteorologist), Captain Daniel Gulley, and myself (Meteorologist).
