On March 11, Directors of Yacht Operations Mark Neiswender and David Cannon, along with Jeremy Davis visited the corporate headquarters for
The Hacker Boat Company. Located in Silver Bay on the shores of scenic Lake George, New York (nicknamed the Queen of American Lakes by Thomas
Jefferson), the Hacker Boat Company is the world's largest manufacturer of classic, timeless mahogany motorboats. The headquarters are
located a little less than an hour away from Weather Routing's offices in Glens Falls.
|
Upon our arrival, we were greeted by Ken Rawley, the Director of Marketing, who then gave us a tour of their headquarters. We toured their
corporate offices, several showrooms, maintenance facilities, and marina. Ken explained that a short distance north of Silver Bay in
Ticonderoga is their production facility, where between sixteen and twenty hand crafted Hacker-Crafts are built each year. Each takes
approximately fourteen hundred hours to construct and features over a dozen coats of varnish.
The Hacker Boat Company was founded by naval architect John L. Hacker in 1908. In the 1910's, Hacker designed several boats that were world
record holders for speed. In the following decade, the company expanded further and their facility was moved from Detroit to Mount Clemens,
Michigan. In the 1930's, their vessels were winning more speed records, eventually totalling twenty. Mr. Hacker would pass away in 1961.

In 1959, the company was purchased by William Morgan, who moved the Hacker Boat Company to Silver Bay, New York. Over the following decades,
additional improvements to vessel construction / features were developed, such as improved handling and control. In 2001, George Badcock's Erin
Investments took control of the company and continues to invest into its future.
|
Recently, Hacker has expanded into the construction of a new design of luxury yacht tenders. The first build was in 2013, a 33 foot long
tender for the 242 foot mega-yacht Odessa II. With a fuel capacity of 110 gallons, this tender can reach a speed of 38kts. According to
Ken Rawley, "All of Hacker's tenders are custom built and can be modified depending on the client's specifications."
We very much enjoyed our visit to the Hacker Boat Company, including the chance to tour their showroom and headquarters.
